The Trump & GOP War on LGBTQ+ Citizens

Since the start of 2025, we have seen a troubling pattern developing—one rooted in hostility and erasure—that threatens the very core of LGBTQ+ rights and our shared history. The recent actions of the Trump administration and some Republican legislators go beyond policy setbacks; they aim to rewrite, diminish, or outright erase LGBTQ+ contributions from American history and challenge the principles of equality and inclusion. Recognizing this dangerous trajectory is essential for all of us committed to defending personal freedoms and justice.

An Attack on Rights and Recognition

During Donald Trump’s first and current presidency, numerous organizations—including the ACLU, GLAAD, and Human Rights Watch—have documented aggressive moves targeting the LGBTQ+ community. At the forefront have been executive orders redefining sex as solely male or female, impacting protections related to bathrooms, prisons, shelters, and federal documents. These measures have not only denied transgender identities but laid a foundation for broader discrimination.

Access to healthcare, especially gender-affirming care for minors, have been severely restricted. The administration diverted federal funds, threatened providers, and sought to rollback essential services, causing real harm to mental health and well-being. Military policies targeted trans service members, with bans and restrictions aimed at silencing and excluding those who serve openly and proudly.

In education, the administration rescinded protections for trans students, attempted to prohibiting federally funded support for gender fluidity or social transitioning, and sought to limit teaching about LGBTQ+ history and achievements. These attempts to censor and erase the community’s story are part of a broader effort to diminish the visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals in America’s collective consciousness.

Erasing Our History and Suppressing Our Stories

Perhaps most insidiously, the Trump administration (fueled by Christian Nationalists) has had an explicit push to erase LGBTQ+ history from public consciousness. This has included threats to withhold federal funding from states that refused to eliminate LGBTQ-related content from their curricula. Under the ridiculous guise of “anti-Woke” and “anti-DEI”, Teachers and schools have faced potential threats and sanctions if they include any mention of LGBTQ+ achievements or contributions—effectively trying to rewrite textbooks and erase vital parts of American history. Then there is the openly hostile and discriminatory renaming of a Navy ship honoring LGBTQ+ icon and veteran Harvey Milk.

This systematic effort to censor, alter, or diminish the visibility of LGBTQ+ stories and figures is a modern form of cultural erasure. It’s a dangerous attack on the truth that disregards the myriad ways LGBTQ+ Americans have shaped history, fought for civil rights, and contributed to society.

Resisting the Assault

Despite these setbacks and attempts at suppression, LGBTQ+ rights advocates are fighting valiantly through court cases, legislation, and grassroots activism. Courts have temporarily blocked some policies, but the threat remains. Meanwhile, courts and activists are working tirelessly to preserve and promote inclusive education and protect the integrity of LGBTQ+ history.

However, the future of these victories—and the preservation of our history—depends on us. We can’t rely solely on courts or politicians. We have to be proactive, vigilant, and vocal.

The Family Picture: Threats to Equality and Democracy

Beyond federal policies and censorship, some conservative state legislators are actively challenging the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges affirming marriage equality. State-level resolutions aim to pressure the Court into reconsidering that ruling, even though these resolutions are non-binding. Their language seeks to cast doubt on the legality and morality of same-sex marriage, signaling an ongoing attempt to chip away at our rights.

This trend echoes broader efforts to undermine progressive social progress, from banning books that celebrate LGBTQ+ history to threatening to withhold federal funds from states that don’t comply with their narrow definition of ‘family’ and history.

Why This Threat Matters to All of Us

The attack on LGBTQ+ rights and history isn’t just about one community—it’s a direct assault on foundational American ideals of freedom, inclusion, and truth. When politicians can rewrite history, limit access to healthcare, prohibit representatives from recognizing LGBTQ+ contributions, or erase stories of courage and resilience, it sets a dangerous precedent that threatens everyone’s rights and the very integrity of our democracy. Who will they deem ‘undesirable‘ next? Someone you know? Someone you love? You?

This is a warning. If we don’t act now, these efforts could erase decades of progress. Our rights to live authentically, to have our stories told, and to be recognized as equal members of society are at stake.

What We Can Do

  • Educate and Advocate: Support inclusive curricula that recognize LGBTQ+ history and contributions. Hold policymakers accountable.
  • Speak Out: Use your voice—call, write, and protest against censorship, censorship bills, and policies targeting our community.
  • Support Legal Battles: Donate or volunteer with organizations fighting to preserve our rights and history.
  • Vote Wisely: Elect leaders who believe in equality, inclusion, and truth.
  • Stand Together: Raise awareness about the importance of history, education, and equal rights for all.

A Call to Action

Our fight for equality and recognition isn’t over—it’s more urgent than ever. We must resist these attempts to silence us…or erase us.
